As you can see, the process for obtaining a birth certificate if you are currently living abroad or were born abroad to parents who were U.S. citizens may not be as easy as obtaining one locally; however, it is something that can be easily accomplished. Take the time to learn the ins and outs yourself and get in touch with an expert (someone at the proper vital record agency, or who works with a firm that provides ordering services for that agency), and you may find straightforward answers to your questions.
A recent controversy over birth certificates in Arkansas demonstrates that these slips of paper are imbued with political and social meaning. In 2015, a married couple, Marisa and Terrah Pavan, had their first child, who was conceived through sperm donation. The Arkansas Department of Health, or ADH, listed only Terrah, who gave birth to their daughter, on the baby's birth certificate. This was contrary to state law, under which the spouse of the birth mother also is automatically listed.
